BREAKING DAWN REVIEW

Inasmuch as I've loved the Harry Potter series, the Twilight Saga has always been one of my guilty pleasures. And so, when the movie premiered last Friday (midnight), I was one of those who lined up in haste to watch the sought after sequel to last year's "Eclipse." But, the question still resounds, was it worth it?

I've read several movie critiques about the movie most of which were not good. However, I share this blog to see the movie on a different light coming from a member of the clerical state:

First, I would like to give ample credit to the author Stephenie Meyer for laying out a clear position on abortion. Regardless, of whether it is indeed possible for a human and vampire to procreate that's out of the question. The fact that the author presented Bella Swan as a mother-to-be who's very determined to keep the child even if [she] could endanger her life, was something that's interesting to note. For the young audience, it should be a wake up call and a driving force to put life of great value and to NEVER, in any way, think that it's just a matter of CHOICE to keep the child or not. Life is a universal value. The truth that LIFE must be protected is ABSOLUTE as it is a clear expression of LOVE in its truest sense. To put an end to life through abortion intrinsically violates such truth. Bella could have chosen not to keep the child in her womb given the circumstances, but as a mature mother-to-be, she would do everything in her capacity to keep [her]. Doubtful of what kind of a being would come out of her womb, she kept an open mind to save the life of her child.

Second, writers critiqued Stephenie Meyer for having violated the standard vampire behavior for making it possible for a vampire to impregnate a human (See link below for reference). But come to think of it, this is a work of fiction, right? The mind works amazingly with imagination and creativity. I think the author intends to be original as she puts it into writing negating the vampire stereotypes (or "standard" as you please). More importantly, though I may be imposing my own interpretation on this regard, she intends to create artistically the power of a trinity. WIth all my Catholic biases, I see a "Jesus image" coming into play. Renesmee (Bella and Edward's child's name after Renee and Esme), who though female, signifies Christ as Savior; and Edward and Bella as the Father and Holy Spirit irrespectively. In the end, the GOOD will prevail and darkness will be overshadowed by LIGHT. Through that the balance is realized like the yin and yang in order to resolve the conflict.

But then again, was it worth it? I think that it all depends on which angle you would evaluate the film. Amidst the critiques both good and bad, the giggles, the rivalry between team Jacob and Edward, and the gasps of audiences between scenes, I was drawn to focus on the LIGHT. I am for certain that I found Jesus implied in the very words of the author who's power is waiting to be unleashed.
